Hollywood Grotesk Font – Stage Set Typography

Posted in Dark Fonts with tags , , , , on November 26, 2010 by darkvotum

Hollywood Grotesk is my new commercial sans serif font influenced by most store displays and advertising text I’ve seen in Hollywood Blvd.

In the Los Angeles scenery, the architectural stage set typography and man-made landscape – namely Hollywood Modern – is defined as the lavishness and exuberance of the Hollywood metaphors of the past, with their elements of monumental scale, complexity of structure, gaiety, variation of spatial interrelationships, and continuous movement of water, which have been re-interpreted in the six-storey atrium of the Bonaventure Hotel by John Portman. (John V. Mutlow. Architectural Design. 1981).

I’ve prepared the HG alphabet database and a 3D lettering composite for your consideration should you want to license my commercial font – contact me darkvotum at gmail.

Italian Decameron Font – Pasolini Movie Typography

Posted in Dark Fonts with tags , , , on November 4, 2010 by darkvotum

Pier Paolo Pasolini was a film director and one of the greatest Marxist intellectuals of the 20th Century. Unfortunately, his violent murder stopped a brilliant genre of Italian films, which depict human pleasure mixed with cynicism. His biography and films are explained in this dedicated website.

For one of his movies, Il Decamerone, I consolidated the typography of an Italian movie poster and named the font Decameron. A variant style of NeoBaroque typefaces.

Below you can see the alphabet image of my designer work and a 3D title idea. If you want to license this commercial font for your presentation projects, contact me – darkvotum at gmail.

Dune Sanskrit – Mayan Prophecy Typography

Posted in Dark Fonts with tags , , , , on October 20, 2010 by darkvotum

Dune Sanskrit is a commercial font that was released in 2009 and it has been revised in 2010. The font was dedicated to the life of Lord Pakal Ahau, our Maya director of the Pakalian Group of Mexico.

The font was called Dune as a tribute to the sci-fi writer Frank Herbert who wrote the Dune series. The first novel Dune was inspired in the oral tribal traditions of the prophetic return of a Mayan king under poor ecological conditions when Herbert lived in Mexico and finally the novel was published in 1965.

In the design of the font, male sexual features (Naga style) were included that are only noticeable as the font is enlarged in size. Below you can see the alphabet image and a 3D composite. If you want to license this commercial font, contact darkvotum at gmail.

Kahlo Regular Font – Mexican Day of the Dead Typography

Posted in Dark Fonts with tags , , , , , , on October 4, 2010 by darkvotum

During Mexican Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), there are two themes that are very popular in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Skulls themes and Frida Kahlo’s portraits. Don’t ask me why but it has been the normal trend for the last twenty years among California residents. If you’re visiting Los Angeles, you can attend a great celebration at the historic Hollywood Forever cemetery. This year will be the 11th Annual Dia de Los Muertos, on October 2, 2010.

To make my contribution, I made this special commercial font for Frida Kahlo as part of my Mexican foundry collection and a unique Frida Kahlo t-shirt with my commercial font available in the Witches section. Below you can find the images for your consideration. Happy Day of the Dead with sugar skull bread!

The Original Wizard Of Oz Font – 1939 Movie Title Typography

Posted in Dark Fonts with tags , , , , , on October 2, 2010 by darkvotum

I was surprised that no one had the idea of recreating the original movie title font of The Wizard of Oz (1939).

So, I went to the library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood to do some typographic research about this idea. I was pleasantly surprised with some help to find the typographic material of this classical American movie and make my own typeface version of Wizard of Oz.

Here’s the alphabet image I’ve prepared with the final production of the scalable vector font that I call Kansas Rainbow font, putting together the glyphs drawings and class kerning. If you want to license this professional font for your projects or invitations, you can purchase this item with PayPal.
